Everything you need to know about using RoomMooch
Getting Started
New to RoomMooch? Here's everything you need to know.
What is RoomMooch?
RoomMooch connects travelers who have spare space in their hotel bookings (Roomers) with other travelers seeking accommodation (Moochers). If you've booked a twin room but you're traveling solo, you can list the spare bed for free or at a discount. Moochers browse listings and send requests to share.
How does RoomMooch work?
For Roomers (hosts): Import your hotel booking from Booking.com (via PDF upload or email forward), set your preferences, and publish. Moochers will send requests which you can accept or decline.
For Moochers (guests): Browse available rooms on the Search page, find a listing that matches your dates and destination, and send a mooch request. Once accepted, you'll get the host's contact details and can message each other.
Do I need to sign up?
Yes, you'll need a free account to send mooch requests or list a room. You can sign up with Google or create an account with your email. All users must also complete identity verification before using the platform.
Is RoomMooch free to use?
Creating an account and browsing listings is free. There's a one-time $1.99 verification fee to cover identity checks. Mooching a free listing costs nothing. For paid listings, the moocher pays the host's price plus a 10% service fee.
Verification & Safety
How we keep the community safe and trusted.
How does verification work?
All users complete a 6-step verification process: email confirmation, government ID check (passport or driver's licence via Stripe Identity), payment card, phone number (SMS code), a one-time $1.99 verification fee, and agreeing to the Terms of Service. Visit the Verification page to get started.
Why is verification required?
You're sharing a room with a stranger — trust matters. Verification ensures every user has confirmed their real identity, phone number, and payment method. This protects both roomers and moochers. The $1.99 fee covers the cost of ID verification and SMS checks.
Why do I need to add a payment card?
Card verification is a security measure. It confirms you have a valid payment method on file. For moochers, it allows for a pre-authorisation hold that protects roomers against potential damages. No charge is made unless a damage claim is filed within 48 hours of checkout.
Is my personal information safe?
Yes. Stripe handles all payment processing and identity verification — your card details and ID documents are never stored on our servers. Personal details like phone numbers and emails are masked until a booking is accepted. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
What is VIP status?
VIP status is awarded to hosts who have at least one completed room listing and maintain an average review rating of 4 stars or higher across 2 or more reviews. VIP hosts get a badge on their profile and listings, making them more attractive to moochers.

How do I list my spare bed?
Go to the Upload page and either upload your Booking.com confirmation PDF or forward the confirmation email to [email protected]. RoomMooch will automatically extract the hotel name, dates, location, and other details. Review the information, add any preferences, and publish.
Can I charge for my spare bed?
Your first listing must be free — this keeps the community generous. After you've shared one free bed, you can charge up to 25% of your original booking cost on future listings. You'll need to set up payouts to receive payments.
How do I accept or decline mooch requests?
When a moocher sends a request, you'll receive an email notification. Go to the Moochers page to see all applicants. You can view their profile, verification status, and reviews before accepting or declining. When you accept, both of you receive a peer verification code via SMS for safety.
What happens when I accept a moocher?
The moocher is notified by email. You both receive a 6-digit peer verification code via SMS — exchange these when you meet to confirm identity. For paid listings, the moocher will need to complete payment before check-in. Any other overlapping pending requests from the same moocher are automatically withdrawn.
Can I import bookings from other sites (not Booking.com)?
Currently RoomMooch only supports Booking.com confirmation imports (PDF upload or email forward). Support for other booking platforms is planned for the future.
What if there's damage to the room?
You have 48 hours after checkout to file a damage claim with photo evidence. RoomMooch will review the claim and may charge the moocher's pre-authorised card. Both parties can dispute claims through our resolution process. Contact [email protected] to file a claim.
For Moochers (Guests)
Guides for finding rooms and making the most of your stay.
How do I find a room?
Browse the Search page to see available listings. Filter by destination, dates, and price. Toggle the map view to see listings by location. Save listings you like by clicking the heart icon, and set up destination alerts to be notified when new rooms appear in places you want to visit.
How do I send a mooch request?
Open a listing you're interested in and click "Request to Mooch". You must be verified first. You can have up to 2 pending mooch requests for overlapping dates at the same time. If you need to free up a slot, withdraw a pending request from your My Requests page.
What happens after my request is accepted?
You'll get an email confirmation and a peer verification code via SMS. For free listings, you're all set — just message the host to coordinate arrival. For paid listings, you'll need to complete payment through Stripe before check-in. A "Pay Now" button will appear on your My Requests page.
Can I cancel a request?
Yes, you can withdraw a pending request at any time from your My Requests page. Once a request is accepted, you can still cancel but the host will be notified. The $1.99 verification fee is non-refundable.
Why do I need to post a room after 5 mooches?
RoomMooch works because people share. For every 5 times you mooch, we ask you to give back by posting one room listing (free). This 5:1 ratio keeps the supply of beds flowing for everyone in the community.
Payments & Payouts
Everything about fees, payments, and receiving earnings.
What does RoomMooch cost?
A one-time $1.99 verification fee to cover identity and safety checks. Mooching a free listing is completely free. For paid listings, moochers pay the host's price plus a 10% platform service fee. Roomers receive 90% of the booking amount.
How do I set up payouts to earn money?
Go to your Earnings page and click "Set Up Payouts". You'll be redirected to Stripe's secure onboarding to enter your details and bank account. The whole process takes about 2 minutes. Read our full payout setup guide for step-by-step instructions.
Should I choose Individual or Business for payouts?
Individual is right for most hosts — it only requires your name, date of birth, and bank details. Choose Business only if you're operating as a registered company with a business number (ABN, EIN, etc.). When in doubt, choose Individual.
What if Stripe asks for my website during payout setup?
Click "Don't have a website? Add product description instead" and enter something like: "Sharing spare hotel bed with travelers through RoomMooch." You don't need a personal website to receive payouts.
How much do I earn per booking?
You receive 90% of the booking amount. RoomMooch retains a 10% platform fee. For example, if a moocher pays $100, you receive $90. Free listings have zero fees — no commission on free stays.
I left Stripe payout setup halfway — can I continue?
Yes! Just go back to your Earnings page and click "Set Up Payouts" again. Stripe will pick up where you left off.
Messaging
How to communicate with roomers and moochers.
How do I message someone?
Once a mooch request is created, a message thread is automatically opened between the roomer and moocher. Go to your Messages page to see all conversations. Messages update in real time — no need to refresh.
Will I get notified of new messages?
Yes. You'll receive an email notification when someone sends you a message (with a 10-minute cooldown to avoid spam). If you've enabled push notifications, you'll also get browser notifications on your device.
Can I message someone before sending a request?
No, messaging is only available after a mooch request is created. This prevents spam and ensures conversations are tied to genuine booking interest.
Reviews & Ratings
How the review system works.
How do reviews work?
After a stay is completed, both the roomer and moocher can leave a review. Reviews include ratings across four categories (cleanliness, communication, accuracy, and overall experience) plus a written comment. You'll receive an email reminder 1-2 days after checkout.
Can I see reviews before booking?
Yes. Reviews are visible on user profiles and listing pages. Check a host's reviews before sending a request, and check a moocher's reviews before accepting.
Can I edit or delete a review?
Reviews cannot be edited or deleted once submitted. This ensures the review system remains honest and trustworthy. If you believe a review violates our guidelines, contact [email protected].
Account & Settings
Managing your profile and preferences.
How do I edit my profile?
Go to your Profile page to update your name, bio, avatar, and social links. A complete profile with a photo helps build trust with other users.
How do destination alerts work?
On your Dashboard, you can set up destination alerts for cities you plan to visit. When a new listing appears in that location, you'll get an email notification. You can have up to 10 active alerts.
How do I enable push notifications?
Click the bell icon in the navigation bar and allow notifications when prompted by your browser. You'll receive instant notifications for new messages, booking updates, and mooch requests.
Can I save listings for later?
Yes! Click the heart icon on any listing to save it. View all your saved listings on the Saved page or in the Saved section of your Dashboard.
Troubleshooting
Common issues and how to fix them.
My PDF upload isn't working
Make sure you're uploading a Booking.com confirmation PDF. The file should be the original PDF from Booking.com's confirmation email. Screenshots, scans, or PDFs from other booking platforms are not supported. If the PDF is valid but still fails, try forwarding the original confirmation email to [email protected] instead.
I can't send a mooch request
Check that you've completed all verification steps. You also can't have more than 2 pending requests for overlapping dates. If you need to free up a slot, withdraw a pending request from your My Requests page.
I didn't receive my SMS verification code
Make sure you entered your phone number correctly with the country code. You can request up to 3 codes within 15 minutes. Check that your phone can receive SMS messages and isn't blocking unknown numbers. If you've exceeded the attempt limit, wait 15 minutes and try again.
The listing images aren't loading
Listing images are sourced from Booking.com and may occasionally be unavailable due to their content delivery network. A placeholder image will show instead. The listing details and booking information are unaffected.
I forgot my password
On the Login page, click "Forgot password?" and enter your email address. You'll receive a password reset link. If you signed up with Google, you don't have a password — just click "Sign in with Google".
