How to Send a Mooch Request: Getting Your First Free Stay
Learn how to find a listing, send a mooch request, and manage your pending requests on RoomMooch. Includes tips on maximizing your chances of acceptance.
Finding a Listing That Fits Your Trip
The first step to getting a free or affordable stay on RoomMooch is finding the right listing. Head to roommooch.com/search, where you can browse all available rooms. The search page includes filters for destination, dates, price range, and property type, so you can narrow down results to match your specific travel plans.
All search filters are persisted in the URL parameters, which means you can bookmark a filtered search or share it with a travel companion. The page displays up to twenty results at a time with infinite scroll for additional listings. Each listing card shows the property name, location, dates, price (or a free badge), and the host's verification status.
You can also toggle the map view to see listings plotted geographically. The map uses Mapbox GL and loads lazily to keep the page fast. Clicking a marker on the map highlights the corresponding listing card. If you find a listing you like but are not ready to request it yet, click the heart icon to save it to your favorites. Saved listings are accessible from your dashboard or the dedicated saved page. If you are not logged in when you click the heart, you will be redirected to the login page and then brought back to the listing.
Sending Your First Mooch Request
Once you have found a listing that matches your travel dates, click on it to open the detail page. Here you will see the full description, property information, host profile, and any reviews from previous guests. If everything looks good, click the Request to Mooch button.
If you are not logged in, you will be redirected to the login page with a next parameter that brings you back to the listing after authentication. If you are logged in but not verified, you will be sent to the verification flow at roommooch.com/verify. Verification is required before you can send any mooch request, and the system will remember the listing you wanted so you can return to it after completing the process.
When the request is submitted, a booking record is created with a status of pending and the host receives an email notification through the newMoochRequestEmail template. The host can then view your profile, check your verification status and reviews, and decide whether to accept or decline. You will be redirected to your My Requests page at roommooch.com/my-requests with a success banner confirming that your request was sent. From there, you can track the status of all your pending, accepted, and past requests.
Understanding Request Limits and Auto-Withdrawal
RoomMooch limits you to a maximum of two pending mooch requests for overlapping date ranges. This rule prevents users from flooding hosts with requests and then leaving most of them hanging. If you try to send a third request for dates that overlap with two existing pending requests, the system will return an error asking you to withdraw one of your current requests first.
The overlapping date logic is strict. If your existing pending request covers June 10 to June 15, and a new listing you want covers June 14 to June 18, those are considered overlapping. Requests for completely separate date ranges do not count against each other, so you could have many pending requests as long as no more than two share any overlapping days.
When a host accepts one of your overlapping requests, the system automatically withdraws your other pending request that overlaps with those dates. The affected host receives both an in-app message and an email notification explaining the withdrawal. This auto-withdrawal mechanism ensures you do not accidentally end up with two accepted bookings for the same dates. It also frees you up to send a new request immediately if another opportunity appears for a different destination during that same period.
What Happens After the Host Responds
When a host accepts your request, several things happen simultaneously. The booking status changes to accepted, and both you and the host receive unique six-digit peer verification codes via SMS. These codes are exchanged in person during check-in to confirm that both parties are the verified users from the platform.
You will also receive an email through the bookingAcceptedEmail template. If the listing is free, the email simply confirms the acceptance with the check-in details. If the listing has a price, the email includes the payment amount and a link to complete payment through Stripe Checkout. Paid listings require payment before the stay, and the host will not receive a payout until the payment is processed.
If the host declines your request, you receive a notification and the booking status changes to declined. There is no penalty for being declined, and you can immediately send a new request to a different listing. You can also re-request the same listing if the host later indicates they are open to reconsidering, as the system allows new requests after a decline. All request statuses are visible on your My Requests page, giving you a clear overview of your active, past, and withdrawn requests.
Tips for Getting Your Request Accepted
Hosts on RoomMooch can see your profile, verification status, and reviews before deciding on your request. A complete and honest profile significantly increases your acceptance rate. Upload a clear photo of yourself, write a brief bio explaining what kind of traveler you are, and make sure your verification badge is visible.
If you have previous stays on RoomMooch, your reviews speak for themselves. Hosts pay close attention to ratings in communication and cleanliness. A track record of positive reviews makes you a much more attractive guest than someone with no history on the platform. If you are new to RoomMooch, consider listing your own spare bed first to build credibility and earn your first reviews.
Timing also matters. Hosts are more likely to accept requests that come in well before the check-in date rather than last-minute inquiries. Sending a request weeks in advance shows planning and consideration. Once your request is pending, you can use the messaging system to introduce yourself and ask any questions about the property. Hosts appreciate proactive communication and it helps build rapport before they make their decision. Being polite, specific about your plans, and respectful of the host's space goes a long way.
