Before You Create a Listing

Creating a listing on RoomMooch starts with having a hotel or hostel booking that includes a spare bed you are willing to share. The platform is designed for travelers who have already booked accommodation and want to offset their costs or meet fellow travelers by offering the unused bed to a verified moocher.

Before you begin, make sure you have completed the full 6-step verification process. The upload page and import API both require verification, and you will be redirected to the verification flow if any step is incomplete. Verification ensures that every host on the platform has been identity-checked, has a valid payment method, and has agreed to the Terms of Service.

You also need your Booking.com confirmation ready, either as a PDF file or as an email you can forward. RoomMooch currently supports imports from Booking.com, which is the most widely used hotel booking platform globally. The parser is optimized for the standard Booking.com confirmation format, so using other platforms may require manual entry of listing details. Having your confirmation on hand before you start the process makes everything faster and smoother.

Importing Your Booking Details

Navigate to roommooch.com/upload to begin creating your listing. You have two import options. The first is PDF upload, where you drag and drop or select your Booking.com confirmation PDF. The parser extracts the property name, address, check-in and check-out dates, room type, number of guests, and price in seconds.

The second option is email forwarding. Forward your Booking.com confirmation to [email protected] from the email address associated with your RoomMooch account. A Cloudflare Worker processes the email and saves the parsed data. Then click the Check Email button on the upload page to load the extracted details into the form. Unclaimed imports are automatically deleted after seven days, so do not wait too long to claim yours.

Whichever method you choose, the result is the same: a pre-filled listing form ready for your review. The system attempts to extract every relevant detail, but you should verify each field. Pay particular attention to the dates and the number of guests, as these directly affect whether moochers see your listing in their search results. If any field was not extracted correctly, you can edit it manually before publishing.

Writing an Effective Listing Description

The description is the most important part of your listing because it is where you communicate directly with potential moochers. The imported data provides the facts, but your description tells the story. Explain the sleeping arrangement clearly: is this a spare bed in a shared room, a sofa bed, or a separate bed in a twin or multi-bed room? Moochers need to know exactly what they are signing up for.

Include practical details that matter to travelers. Mention the neighborhood and its proximity to public transport, restaurants, or attractions. Note the check-in process and any flexibility around timing. If the property has amenities like WiFi, a kitchen, laundry, or a pool, list them. If there are rules about noise, smoking, or guests, state them upfront. Transparency builds trust and leads to better matches.

Write in a friendly and welcoming tone. Remember that you are inviting a stranger to share your space, and your description is their first impression of you as a host. Avoid overly formal language but also avoid being too casual. A balanced, honest description that sets clear expectations will attract the right moochers and lead to a positive experience for both parties. All text you enter is automatically stripped of HTML for security, so focus on plain text content.

Setting the Right Price

RoomMooch listings can be either free or paid, and choosing the right approach depends on your goals. Free listings attract more mooch requests because the core appeal of the platform is free accommodation. If your primary motivation is meeting interesting travelers and building your reputation, listing for free is the way to go. Free listings have no fees whatsoever for either party beyond the one-time verification fee.

If you want to offset some of your accommodation costs, you can set a price up to the maximum of $10,000 per stay. For paid listings, the moocher pays the listed price through Stripe Checkout. The platform retains a 10% service fee, and the remaining amount is transferred to your Stripe Connect account. You will need to set up Stripe Connect through your profile to receive payouts for paid listings.

When pricing your listing, consider what is fair for a spare bed. Research what hostels in the same city charge per night and price your listing competitively below that. A reasonable price that reflects the shared nature of the accommodation is more likely to attract requests than an ambitious price that competes with private rooms. Remember that the moocher is sharing a room with you, which is a fundamentally different experience than having a private space.

Publishing and Managing Your Listing

Once you are satisfied with all the details, click publish to make your listing live. It will immediately appear on the search page and be visible to all RoomMooch users. The listing card shows your property image (or a link to view it on Booking.com), the title, location, dates, price badge, and your host profile snippet.

After publishing, monitor your dashboard for incoming mooch requests. When a moocher sends a request, you receive an email notification and the request appears on your moochers page at roommooch.com/moochers. You can view the applicant's profile, verification status, and any reviews before making a decision. Click Accept to approve the moocher or Decline to pass on that applicant.

Your listing remains active until the check-out date passes, at which point the daily cron job automatically marks it as expired. You can also edit your listing at any time from the edit page, which is accessible from your dashboard or the listing detail page. If your plans change and you need to remove the listing entirely, use the delete option on the edit page. The listing will be soft-deleted, remaining in the database for reference but no longer visible to searchers. Any in-progress bookings associated with a deleted listing are handled according to the cancellation policies in the Terms of Service.
